Did you know that in 2018 over 1,290 children in Taylor County received free or reduced-price meals through the National School Lunch Program and the National School Breakfast Program? For many of these children, school meals may be the only meals they eat. What happens when they go home over the weekend?
To help local children the United Way of Taylor County is coordinating a:
Meals in a Backpack Campaign
July 27 – August 28, 2020
The Meals in a Backpack Program is available to all children in Taylor County Schools. The backpacks are packed to provide kid friendly meals and snacks over the weekend for those in need. The backpacks are packed by the SOAR students which provides them with a learning experience and service to their community. Students are referred to the program by school staff such as: classroom teachers, paraprofessionals, school social workers and home resource staff. Once a child /family is referred, a phone call is made home to see if the program is a good fit.
We are asking local businesses to help with being a collection site, making a donation or being a monetary donation site. At the end of the drive, we’d like a representative from each business to deliver their donation and take part in a photo. The photo will be scheduled for the end of August. Please contact us to see how you can help.
